After Microneedling: When To Include Serums, Devices And Other Skincare Products Back Into Your Routine (2023)

*MaybesaferotateBottom center of this blogfor my latest protocol suggestions and also for the 7 week schedule I mentioned in my YouTube video.

Most of you know that I am a big proponent of microneedling. Microneedling for collagen induction (CIT) has many benefits.Controlled trauma to the skin using microneedling puts the skin into a repair mode, which causes the body to produce new collagen and elastin, making our skin plumper and plumper.resilience. It's not unlike resistance training in a gym: we hurt the muscle, give it fuel to repair it, and it grows in size and quality. It is important that microneedling not only bring all these advantages. How we treat our skin after microneedling can have more of an impact on our results than the microneedling itself!

If you think about it, it makes sense. Our body's ability to repair itself is completely dependent on the resources available. We must ask ourselves:

  1. Have we kept our wounds clean so that there are no infections that can endanger us or consume resources to build new cells?

  2. do we feed?internallySo does our body have the "raw materials" to build collagen and elastin?

  3. We have been feeding ourselves externally so our bodies have the resources to handle it (remember the skin absorbs 60-70% of what we put on it, quality is VERY important)

  4. Have we considered whether our other skin care "interventions" are helping or hurting us as we heal?

Below you will find a guide and some frequently asked questions. Remember, you've just inflicted thousands of tiny micro-injuries on your skin; now is the time to step in and establish a careful protocol for supplementation and internal and external healing. BecauseThe way we treat our skin in the days after a treatment dramatically affects the level of rejuvenation we experience.

So you've had over 0.5mm microneedling for collagen (your monthly needling session) and you're wondering what to pack, what to put on your skin, and what other devices to use for the next month. let's get over this!

Day 0 (the big day of collagen induction!)

The day you fix it, it's all about simplicity. as Dr. Lance Setterfield the author ofThe small skin needling guidedice,"Keep it safe, keep it simple". If you want to see me needle, you can check mineMicroneedling Protocol for Collagen. Once the needling is complete, the skin will feel hot, look sunburned, and may show signs of localized bleeding. It's okay to jump into the shower and let the warm water wash over your skin for 10-20 minutes while the hyaluronic acid massages and dries the fluids from your face. If you prefer to rinse your skin in the sink, that's fine (I prefer the shower option). Wash your hands well beforehand and gently massage the skin with lukewarm water only. This rinse is optional (it's okay to leave the HA on the skin, it may not be comfortable).

When it comes to diet, Dr. Setterfield (and I totally agree) that we should take oral supplements with nutrients that provide the building blocks for collagen and elastin formation; liposomal vitamin C, omega 3, vitamins A, E and calcium (I take it in the form of a multivitamin). Dr. Setterfield recommends using them consistently throughout the collagen induction cycle.

Next step: red light! LED is the perfect combination with microneedling. Red LED can reduce erythema (redness) and inflammation. The red LED (633nm) enhances keratinocyte proliferation (wooohooo fresh skin!) and the near-infrared LED (700-830) increases collagen and elastin formation (yes! Stronger, more elastic skin!). actuallytouch your skin(risk of cross contamination) and you're doneclean before useif you accidentally touch your skin.

After the LED, you can add hyaluronic acid. So keep calm: don't wear makeup, perfume or other products near your face please! You should also avoid the gym, sauna, and direct sunlight for at least the first 24 hours after your microneedling treatment.

Days 1-5 (feeling a little flushed and dehydrated?)

You wake up the next day and rinse your skin (it's okay to wash it, if you feel the urge, just use averymild facial cleanser) and then apply green tea. This can come in the form of a serum/toner (make sure it doesn't contain alcohol or other harsh ingredients!). Green tea is a calming antioxidant that is perfect for dehydrated skin.

Next, I like to apply vitamin C and then a face oil that is high in linoleic acid to soothe and nourish the skin. This is where most people will benefit from a moisturizer with ingredients like ceramides, shea butter, and squalane. You'll finish up with a good amount of sunscreen, and you'll be good to go in the morning. This is repeated every morning for the first 5 days.

To summarize skin care in the morning for the first five days:

  1. green tea

  2. Vitamin C

  3. Kiwi seed oil or other oil rich in linoleic acid:This VIDEO explains EVERYTHING about oils!

  4. Moisturizing cream with ceramides, shea butter and squalane

  5. FPS!

Night care for the first 5 days, my protocol (which you can adjust according to your preferences) is as follows:

  1. Clean

  2. green tea tonic

(Video) Post microneedling: when to add serums, devices and skincare back into your routine | Penn Smith

  3. growth factor

  4. choice of oil

  5. gentle moisturizer

  6. That's all!!

Remember, the first 5 days are all about nourishing and replenishing your skin and helping it heal. You may very well experience flaking and dryness down the road; this is perfectly normal. Around the fifth day, you can use a gentle enzyme peel to get rid of dandruff. Smooth is the keyword here. Vitamin A can also be reintroduced around day 5, depending on tolerability and the form of vitamin A. While this topical vitamin is necessary and very good for post-needling skin, it can also be very irritating, which is not something we want. do after puncture. Be careful with vitamin A.

Days 6-14 (feels "normal" again, but there's a lot going on below the surface)

Once you enter the fibroplastic phase (days 6-14), your routine may remain the same, but you have more options to add other skin care products to help build new tissue. Growth factors and copper peptides are fantastic ingredients at this point, as the wounds begin to produce new tissue. Beware of irritation and pay attention to the healing process. Use the attached chart to see what other ingredients to add and what other modalities to reintroduce into your routine. Also consult the TABLE OF INGREDIENTS TO AVOID to make sure you continue to let your skin repair itself and not respond to aggression.

Days 15-28 (time forpatience)

Two weeks after your microneedling session, you'll feel like you're in the distant past. But don't be fooled! Her skin is still undergoing profound changes that, if stopped, could thwart your collagen induction efforts! This is the time to be patient. Day 15 is the beginning of the last phase: the maturation phase: you will find that your selection of ideal ingredients expands again and you have a lot of flexibility in choosing your skin care.

Below are some options for microneedle protocols. Be sure to print my "7 Week Calendar" and use it with your protocol of choice!

remember that tooTAKE PICTURES!The results are often subtle (it's just reality) and we need to be able to compare them to see them.

Schedule Tip 1: Slow and steady microneedling +

- Month 1-6, collagen induction microneedling once a month

- Month 7-9, do a series of monthly TCA peels or IPL like Faustina

- Month 10-12, return to microneedling or apply another modality such as radiofrequency

Timeline Tip 2: Microneedling + PeelingAlternatively, you can use PEELS to choose a schedule similar to this:

Use microneedling, wait 2+ weeks before exfoliating, then wait AT LEAST 3 more weeks to reneedle. In this scenario, I would recommend leaving other modalities for another time. It is still important to follow the microneedling chart above for topics and supplements, but effectively we have extended the timeline for microneedling.

Schedule Tip 3: Microneedling + multiple devices (detailed below)

This is a schedule that I created that accommodates multiple modalities in one protocol. I modified (stretched) the microneedling program to allow the use of other devices.Be sure to check out the 7-week calendar for help with planning! You can also print my copy AND a space to help you developyou planand fulfill it.

Please watch my video on this specific protocol and stay tuned as I create even more protocols with different modalities. This protocol uses medical microneedles, laser (in my case Nira), LED, radiofrequency (in my case NEWA) and microcurrent.

MeinMicroneedling + multiple devicesThe schedule looks like this:

Brand 1 **Take picturesand then medical needle wherever you wantexcept around the eyes.Around the eyes, we use the Nira Laser in the same session as the needle (be careful not to overlap the needle and laser areas).publish immediatelyWe use our LED. We use hyaluronic acid on the first day. See all the serums and products to use in the days after your puncture (above) and add them to your calendar if it helps you stay organized!

in the next dayWe'll add microcurrent and make sure your chosen device is sparkling clean. So, days 2 through 9 look like this in this order:

1. Clean

2. Nira Laser around the eyes (every day)

2. Green tea, then LED (3-5 days a week)

3. Microcurrent (3-5 days a week and Noaround the eyes where we use the laser)

So some days you ONLY do the Nira Laser. 3-5 days a week, you do all three together, in that order.

4. Follow all the skin care products listed above for days (so take care of your skin mainly after using your devices. The exception is green tea in front of LED. After you finish with microcurrent, you can wash your face (if using conductive gel, use what you want) to wash) and continue with your skincare routine. I often use my devices and then wash and do my skincare routine from scratch.

on the 10thWe add radio frequency! I use the NEWA RF device. There are a few ways to do this: If you are just getting started with RF,you want to do5 days a week. Be sure to put it on your calendar.

***Repeat: If you are already using RF (i.e. you have been doing NEWA 5 days a week for at least 4-8 weeks before starting this protocol), just decide between 3, 4 and 5 days a week on day 10 of this protocol. . If you areJust startingNEWA You should 'run' 5 days a week for 4-8 weeks at this point (from day 10) before going down to fewer days a week. Nira Laser continues every day.

Here is the order of the devices Day 10+ (until we click again)

1. Nira laser around the eyes (every day)

2. LED (3-5 days a week)

3. Radiofrequency (3-5 days a week)

4. Microcurrent (3-5 days a week)

Again... you can do this 3, 4 or 5 days a week and it doesn't have to be the same days each week.Do what works for your life and what stays with you and what you can do!Remember to use the calendar!print 3: my sample calendar, a hole that you fill in advance(flat) and thenA 3. Copy paragraphRegister your treatments. This helps with accountability and makes a great "journal" too!

On this calendar, you'll see a place to write the months (top right corner) and days (the pink squares) and take notes at the end of each week. I'll be making a protocol for other modalities soon, but in the meantime, feel free to use this calendar (print a blank) to your heart's content (ifSharePlease leave my logo intact and credit my website/blog).

Note that I abbreviated "nira laser" to laser and RF is high frequency (NEWA to me).

frequent questions

What is the microneedling protocol to increase collagen in my skin?

I recommend you watch my video onMicroneedling for collagen induction.

Is it better to use a dermal roller or a microneedling pen?

I prefer a pencil as it allows you to define different depths in different areas of the face. For example, you should use a shallower depth around the eyes and on the forehead and a deeper depth on the cheeks.

How deep should I use a needle at home?

I recommend that people use home medical needles with needles no larger than 0.5mm to 1mm depending on the area. Less is more!

Is there any advantage to having a dermatologist or esthetician perform microneedling?

Of course, trained professionals can safely go deep to treat deeper wrinkles, age spots, and scars. You will also have access to special powerful red LEDs and preparations of growth factors and other ingredients to aid healing.

What about needles to help with scars?

In my opinion, needling to reduce scarring requires the support of a doctor.

Are there any contraindications for microneedling?

Yes, see the list below.

It is important to consult your doctor before beginning any collagen induction microneedling class. There are several situations/conditions that may be contraindicated which are listed below. This list is not exhaustive, please do your own research to ensure you are a good candidate. Please don't risk it.

Possible contraindications for medical microneedling for collagen induction:

  • Presence of skin cancer, warts, solar keratosis or skin infections.

  • Do not operate the device during chemotherapy, high-dose corticosteroids, or radiation therapy.

  • anticoagulant therapy.

  • Active outbreak of acne or herpes.
